1 Cougar on the Prowl at Starwood 6 Pari II July gi. 1979 CoeAt.flel.e0 SlUnee FILM CLIPS Shelved TV Satire to Get Theater Release I' I. .1, A BY CHARLES SCHREGER Tlnwi Stiff Wrlttr i JQ (IE m.V- HANDS OFF A TV special wrought by the "Saturday Night Live" folks, including, from left, executive producer Lome Michaels, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, et al is now destined for the silver screen. The folks at NBC's "Saturday Night Live" went too far this time. They produced a 90-minute special, "Mr.

Mike's Mondo Video," that was vulgar, tasteless, raunchy and gross. At least, it was more vulgar, tasteless, raunchy and gross than usual for the often brilliant, insightful and hilarious "Saturday Night Live." The network's head of broadcast standards, Herminio Traviesas, took a look at the TV satire about two months ago, and said that it did not meet NBC's "standards." The program would not be aired, not even in the 11:30 p.m.-l a.m. slot on Saturday night. It would be assigned to a spot on a shelf to collect dust. That appeared to be the program's fate until Paul Klein, who was NBC's head of programming before resigning last February, met the show's producer writer-director host, Mi chael O'Donoghue, at a recent party.

Klein asked about the special and O'Donoghue reported the network's verdict. Klein, now an independent television producer, decided that the material deserved a better fate. In a telephone interview from New York, Klein said he has made a deal with NBC to reimburse the network the $300,000 it cost to produce the show in return for the rights to rt lease "Mondo Video" in movie Waters. So those who want to see what Klein is calling "the television show that can't be shown on television," will get a chance in mid-September. if-' V'' Some examples: Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Jeremy Paul Ka-gan.

John Landis and George Lucas both got chances to direct their first big studio productions at Universal. Although Universal Pictures president Ned Tanen said that it isn't a new policy -just a continuation of the ongoing search for new talent-the studio is turning more and more to the theater for new directors. Tony Award -winning Broadway director Jack Hofsiss recently was signed to a three-picture deal with Universal. Most recently, Hofsiss directed "The Elephant Man" on Broadway. He has never directed a feature.

Robert Greenwald, another feature novice with credits from the stage, including Broadway and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles has been signed by Universal to direct Olivia Newton-John in a musical, "Xanadu." Asked if he feels stage directors stand at a disadvantage because they are not familiar with the technical aspects of film directing, Tanen said' "I don't really think it's a big problem. "The key is to surround them with the right crew. We spend a lot of time casting the crew in those cases. There are really no ground rules about transferring from the stage to the screen." i'lufi KWJ Hi iV- i -vi WIST LA. LA MKADA Dlaney'aAPPlI DUnTPUNO LAJKIRABA 1 Seven Dance Companies Scheduled for Three Series at Ambassador Auditorium John Cougar was sprung on the music world a few years ago by former Bowie manager Tony DeFries as a youthful, James Dean-cum-Bruce Springsteen figure from the Midwest.

The Indiana-born singer-songwriter has made enormous strides since his last Los Angeles appearance two years ago, but he still has a long way to go before becoming a satisfying live attraction. The Starwood was virtually deserted for the second set Thursday night, and Cougar wisely adopted a loose, informal approach for the hour-long performance. He's shed much of the show-biz artifice that made his last show such an embarrassment in favor of a more natural stage presence, but he's not yet a charismatic figure. His backing band, the Zone, is a competent, well-drilled sextet modeled on Springsteen's Street Band. The bassist, a Mark Knopfler looka-life, adds a dash of artiness with his Jackson Pollock-style, paint-splattered suit and instrument, but the rest look as if they just stepped off Main The problem is that Cougar's entire approach is completely patterned after Springsteen.

His singing and songs don't measure up to those formidable standards. "American Dream" and "Great Midwest" are effective despite the derivativeness simply because it's easy to believe that Cougar went through those experiences. But the remaining material sounds like strained, contrived exercises from some street-poet song-writing textbook, and Cougar isn't convincing enough to pull it off. Opening the first set was the Balls, a hapless local quintet which apparently never got the word that campy glitter-rock wore out its welcome five years ago. -DON SNOWDEN LONG KACH LAKEWOOD RIVOLI SBiSt Long Bcti.

Most of the "Saturday Night Live" people have recently moved into feature films.

Belushi was seen in "Animal House." He and Aykroyd are featured in the upcoming "1941." Murray stars in "Meatballs," which is turning into a big hit for Paramount. He's also now filming "Where the Buffalo Roam" in Los Angeles. Newman was featured in "American Hot Wax" last year. With that cast, plus the successful history of "sketch movies" that parody video-films such as "Kentucky Fried Movie," "Tunnelvision" and "Groove Tube" Klein could have a potential hit. Lome Michaels, producer of "Saturday Night Live," was the executive, producer of "Mondo Video." The special was part of a deal he has to make eight specials for NBC, Klein said.

Initially, the picture, which is now being transferred from videotape to 35mm film, will be released in New York by Klein. He said he is hoping to generate some interest from a nation All rqht owl Seven dance companies will appear on three separate series in Ambassador's 1979-80 season. San Francisco Ballet will open Series A (in Pasadena Civic Auditorium) Oct. 4 with "La Fille Mai Gardee." The remainder of this series (at Ambassador) lists members of New York City Ballet led by Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefous (Dec. 6); Houston Ballet's staging of "Coppelia" (Feb.

28); Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, directed by Brian Macdonald, in a performance of "Romeo and Juliet" -(April 24) and the Dance Theater of Harlem (June 12). McBride, Bonnefous and company al distributor to handle the release in the rest of the country, including Los Angeles, INSPIRED: Religious films generally are considered to be too specialized for the major film companies. In a very unusual move, however, Warner Bros, has acquired distribution rights to "Jesus," the story of Jesus Christ told entirely through the words of the New Testament's Gospel according to Luke, Warner's executive vice president Terry Semel said that the company has never handled a religious film before. After viewing a rough cut of the Genesis Project film a few months ago, Semel decided to pick up the pictures. He said his feeling is that it can appeal to a wide audience, although not necessarily the usual movie audience.

Inspirational Film Distributors, which handles religious releases, has been hired to assist with "Jesus." The picture is scheduled for its first engagements in mid-October in 330 theaters across the country. NEW TALENT: Universal has a history of giving new directors, especially directors with television backgrounds and those right out of film school, shots at directing feature films.
