In its first 10 minutes, this Crown International release cuts back and forth between a pretty hitchhiker (Linda Purl) and a handcuffed young man (Timothy Bottoms) being driven back to the prison from which he has escaped. Of course, their paths will cross dramatically and, as it happens, they're soon heading off to the vast wilderness of the Canadian Rockies together.

Writer Bud Townsend takes care in setting up his story, avoiding exposition as much as possible so that we get to know Bottoms and Purl as they're getting to know each other. In time, our feeling is confirmed that Bottoms is no hardened criminal. He got caught trying to sell 100 pounds of marijuana and he's a self-reliant loner who grew up in foster homes. From the start, we see that Purl is great with kids and is a bit childlike herself. She eventually admits to Bottoms she's a slow learner who cannot read.

She may in fact not be retarded at all but merely dyslexic and over-protected. The point is that she thinks of herself as backward and has felt so confused and menaced by urban life she's run away to her father's cabin in the wilderness. As a concerned parent, he has, however, taught her the skills of survival how to defend herself and even how to live off the land and to climb mountains. In these things she's confident and accomplished, and soon Bottoms will be grateful that she is. Admittedly, "The High Country," which has a strong purity of nature versus the corruption -of society undercurrent, is very familiar in every way and sounds like a TV movie.

But no TV set could do justice to its scenery. More important, there are few couples on the screen just now as appealing as Bottoms and Purl. An actor whose skills were evident from the start of his career in "Johnny Got His Gun" and "The Last Picture Show," Bottoms today is more attractive. In both the sense of humor he's able to express and even in appearance, he brings to mind Ryan O'Neal. Delicately beautiful and blond, Linda Purl is an actress of such radiance that she makes anything she's in worth seeing.

"The High Country" affords her a wonderful part, one in which she can give fine shading to the girl's supposed limitations and then evoke the joy she experiences in discovering that those limits are not necessarily as arbitrary as she had been taught they were. There's a glorious sense of awakening in this girl, and Purl expresses it exquisitely, with never a false note. Purl works steadily, still mainly in television, but she's overdue for major screen roles. Making everything mesh so well is director Harvey Hart, a Canadian who has had more success in TV than in films but whose movies always seem to have their moments. (One of his earliest, "The Sweet Ride," a coming-of-age drama, sticks in the mind.) "The High Country" (rated PG for adult themes) is an unqualified success.

But will this satisfying, sensitive little film find an audience? 'THE HIGH COUNTRY' A Crown International release. Produced with the participation of the Canadian Film Development Corp. and Filmcorp Entertainment Finances, Inc. Exec, producer Gene Slott. Producer Bruce Mallen.
