I CP By MICHAEL SEILER Jimcs Staff Writer SANTA BARBARA-A late-night meeting in a Sol-vang bar may be the key to solving the murders of a prominent sculptor, his live-in girlfriend and his business partner, investigators said Friday. Sheriff John Carpenter told reporters that an arrest is expected in the next few days but did not elaborate. The mysterious slayings of Santa Barbara artist Giovanni Schoeman, 40, girlfriend Kimberley Roberts, 27, of Long Island, N.Y., and business associate Cornells Moll, 41, of Ventura has spawned a flood of tips, leads and rumors being checked by investigators.

One of the most promising, officers said, is information supplied by a frequent visitor to the Schoeman house who said she was told by Roberts late Tuesday that Schoeman had gone to his Solvang gallery to meet someone "terribly important." The shootings apparently occurred Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Went to Meet 'Somebody Special' Mary Ann Denman said that Roberts told her during a phone conversation Tuesday night, "Giovanni's not here. He went up to the gallery tonight to show somebody special some pieces." Denman said she was not told the identity of the person. A Solvang bartender told police Schoeman and Moll were in his bar Tuesday night and the two, who were former South African residents, spoke to each other in Afrikaans. They were joined by a third man and switched to English, the bartender said.

The identity of the third man in the bar may be crucial, detectives said. The bodies of Schoeman and Moll were found early Wednesday morning along the highway between Santa Barbara and Solvang. Roberts' body was found several hours later in Schoeman's home. Each had been shot once in the head. Investigators continued Friday to refuse to confirm or deny persistent reports that Schoeman was involved in dealing with large quantities of diamonds mined in South Africa.

Luis Velasquez of Compton was killed Thursday night after a car chase from Compton into a nearby unincorporated area of the county after shots were fired from the auto he was in, said Compton Police Cmdr.

Gil Sandoval. Sandoval said officers saw two males with a rifle and a sawed -off shotgun fire into a group of youths at a Compton intersection. Sandoval said two officers, whom he would not identify, chased the auto for several blocks before it suddenly stopped, apparently having run out of gas. Disobeyed Police Orders The officers ordered the two males and a female inside to put up their hands, but Velasquez got out of the back seat and crouched beside the auto, Sandoval said. Sandoval said the officers' vision was blocked by an open car door.

They ordered Velasquez to raise his hands and he failed to comply, Sandoval added. The young man moved suddenly and the officers shot him, Sandoval said. The youth was not armed, but a sawed-off shotgun was found inside the car, according to Sandoval.
