Director Oliver Hellman creates a dark, ominous atmosphere. Even people in crowd scenes seem like sleepwalkers. The script by Jerome Max, Tito Carpi and Steve Cara-batsos derives much from many other animals-maddened-by-human-stupidity sagas. Two of the film's most grisly scenes are the deaths of a 10-year-old boy and a young woman, both mutilated by the octopus.

High-frequency sound waves apparently trigger the octopus into retaliation, terrorizing the oceanside community. A marine scientist (Bo Hopkins) who has an empathetic relationship with two killer whales is called in to investi gate. Meanwhile, his wife (Delia Boggardo) goes out in a motorboat and is crushed to death. Kids participating in a sailboat regatta also become victims. Hopkins vows vengeance.

Along with his assistant (Alan Boyd) and his two faithful whales, he goes after the octopus. Marine and underwater sequences have been directed competently by Nestore Ungaro. Shelley Winters is cast per usual as a frantic mother. Her brother is John Huston, a reporter who is investigating the horrible deaths. Henry Fonda plays the passive and, thereby, responsible president of a drilling company who has allowed his assistant (Cesare Danova) to experiment with the sound waves that have disrupted the ocean floor.

la Times "A tender, touching, engrossing, exotic love story. A very special experience for special people who love to laugh, cry and forgive others their madness. Just as New York accepts and cradles these two, I hope you'll do the same with this beguiling, enlightening movie. Courageous is the word for those bringing us 'Outrageous'." -lh smith. cosmopolitan "It's a marvelous, fresh, touching film with heart-tugging insight and compassion, and most def initely the season's major, unheralded surprise.

This one is a gem." Rex Reed "Outstanding summer entertainment, marvelously witty and exhilarating. Andrew Sarris, Village Voice "Much more moving and amusing than it is outrageous. The dialogue is fresh and spirited, witty and lifelike." John Simon, New York Magazine "This funny, wise, compassionate film is mainly concerned with human beings and their hunger for self-respect and some kind of love. In its simple, delightfully unaffected way, it manages to touch the heart." Kathleen Carroll, N.Y.
