Timet photo by Susan Ragan Jury Will Hear Charges Against Compton Officer BY TOM GORMAN Timet Staff Writer Charges that a Compton police detective used excessive force on four teen-agers held in the city's jail will be presented to the county grand jury Oct. 25, The Times has learned. The jury proceedings culminate a six-month investigation by the district attorney's office into charges that Saul Lankster, 32, used "excessive and unnecessary force" on young prisoners on four different occasions. Lankster, a nine-year veteran of the Compton police force, was elected earlier this year to the Compton Unified School District Board of Education. A spokesman for the district attorney's office said he could not comment on the case since grand jury proceedings are secret.

Persons close to the investigation, however, said about a half-dozen witnesses have been subpoenaed to appear before the jury, and that Lankster himself has been asked to go before the panel. Lankster Wednesday said he had "no comment" about the investigation nor whether he would appear voluntarily before the jury. Compton Police Chief Joseph Rouzan said "the allegations relate to four persons ranging in age from 16 to 19 years who were in custody for felony charges at the Compton facility when the acts allegedly occurred." The request that the district attorney's office investigate the charges followed a Compton police department internal investigation last March, sources said. The sources said the four boys did not initiate the charges against Lankster, that the incidents were independent of one another and that "three of the kids didn't even know each other." The decision by the district attorney's office to take its evidence to the grand jury followed an unsuccessful attempt for a plea bargain, one source reported. :7 V- vM THE ROYAL COPENHAGEN, GEORG JENSEN ROOM OPENS TODAY AT BULLOCK'S WILSHIRE It is with great pleasure that we announce this, yet another of our prestigious, specialty rooms.
