Maureen Forrester sings the contralto solos with exceptionally opulent tone and a dynamic scale of a rkable sensitivity.

Even more important, she penetrates every nuance of the text and, in general, performs with that special conviction that comes only from long-standing, intimate knowledge of a work. Tenors in the "Lied" usually excel either in the ringing, dramatic out- bursts (mostly high), or in the nimble, introspective moments. Few manage both extremes equally well, and Vilem Pribyl is no exception. The Czech heldentenor-to-be, who was appearing in the States for the first time, revealed a voice of striking power, brightness; and concentration, and a somewhat limited affinity for the lyric portions of his assignment Nevertheless, his was an auspicious debut Vivaldi's "Winter," which opened the program closed the "Seasons" cycle, sounded unformed in concept, uninformed in style. Acoustical problems are not yet consistently solved.

Nor is the basic Mahlerian conflict miniaturist vs. gargantuan consistently reconciled. Still, the ingredients of a fine "Lied" were present a sense of poetic identification, a penchant for emotional expansion, a built-in appreciation for the value of restraint. Whether or not the listeners understood the difference is open to speculation. But they did listen respectfully, and wonder of wonders applauded enthusiastically.

(It is impossible to judge whether the response was occasioned by the work itself, by Mehta's rather subdued reading of it, or by the final "two octavefuls of icositetraphonic harmony" cited by Nicolas Slonim-sky's program note. The important thing is that they applauded.) At the ISCM Festival in Amsterdam, by the way, the audience demanded an encore. Here, that custom is reserved for instrumental soloists, exclusively. Mahlerian Conflict Applause turned out to be a decisive factor in the Mahler as well. In this case, however, the problem involved a lack of discrimination, andor sophistication.

Oblivious to the fact that the six songs are continuous and interrelated, and unconcerned by the fact that no one on the stage responded, the assembly clapped after every number. A pox on all those overzealous, mood-shattering hands! BY MARTIN BERXHEIMEB Jta, TMnts MaK lelter CZubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic played one of their hop-skip-a d-jump programs Thursday. Eccentric Technique i Most newsworthy, no dpubt, was the Pende-rtecki, which introduced to Jyos Angeles one of the most influential (and most fashionable) new voices in European modernism. "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" is a anticonventional study in string complexity vaguely related to the ideologies of impression-sirh.

It was written in 1860, when the Polish composer was 27, and has served him as an imposing international calling card. In "Hiroshima," 52 strings are bowed behind the bridge or on the tail-piece, banged, tapped, knocked, and forced to sound" in various other abnormal ways. The result is remarkably ordered and tensely constructed, despite the technical eccentricities at work part of the time. "Hiroshima" i3 essentially a dramatic expression, not a cerebral exercise, and it succeeds emphatically on those terms.
