To the Editor of the Agricultural lh-partment tho summer and full of tb first 5 ear after I came to Los Angeles, I noticed that my tautis were troubled with sure beads and blindness, and auppowd they bad the roup 01 aoeeziog catarrh. I went about doctoring them for roup. Some of them got so blind they couldn't see to eat. I caught wme of them to feed them by atulHog the feed into their mouths with my finder, la doing this work I noticed oa their bead, and especially about their eye aorea aud scab, which I had never before seen on a hen's bead afflicted with the roup. I didn't know what to make of it, or what to do for it.

My doctoring for the roup didn't do much good. The hens were (watinualiy scratching their head, aud I suppose that auggeated the idea to me that they bad some thing else than the roup. Manj years ao there was a loathsome disease among the children and young folks in luriiana and Ken-tacky, called by some the itch, by others the Wabash scratches, and by others still acabin (ska-bug). The disease began to show itself in sore and scabs under and about the finger-nails, or between the finger and toes, and if nothing was done to stop it, it spread all over the band and other parts of the body: It seemed a if no greater pleasure could be conferred upon those tifiicted than that of scratching. I don't suppose we knew then what caused that itching any more than so many mules; at least I never heard of it being bugs for many yearn afterwards.

My mother beat up brimstone and mixed it with fresh butter aud rubbed the affected parts, and aoou we were well of it and kept well of it. Here is where I got clue: If brimstone and butter will cure my hands of their itching, why will not the same thing cure these jtieus' heads of their itchmg. Of course I have learned since I had the itch, that about all the doctors agree that it is produced by bags. So 1 examined very carefully for bugs on the heads of the bens, but I couldn't see one. They may be there, all the same, although 1 may not be able to see them, so I'll try what virtue tuere is in the fumes of sulphur.

To make the sulphur clio fast I took one pint of linseed oil and mixed it in sulphur and lard till it was about the consistency of thick cream. I ru I a little of this mixture on the heads of the bens with my finger and they got sound and well, even some of them that were as blind as bats. We had do more trouble with that kind of bugs, for reasons which I may give some other time, till this summer. When I left the ranch I sold all my chickens. After I bad got settled down here, I bought six neus and rooster, and pretty soon I saw that they had the scratches.

Now is my tim. I am armed and equipped as the law directs. I am going to know if bugs cause this itching, and what kind uf 'looking fallows they are. I caught one ot those bens and tied her legs so she couldn't kick, and tied her wtcga together so she couldn't flop, and brought my Orauge-Judd microscope to bear upon her head, and there, sure enough, was the bug I was expec ing and looking for. lie is entirely too small to be seen to any advantage by the naked ere.

He is too shy and ac tive to get a good look at him on a ben's head. He does his work and snends most of bis time underneath the cuticle that part of the skin which h-a no blood and feeiing in it. He comes out frorn there occasionally. But it is a difficult matter to get a good look at him. Being obi iced to hold the microscope in the hand, it is a very difficult matter to keep a bug in the neia view longeoouirn to get a look at bira.

The breaming of the hen and your own breathing are in your wav, but I am hoping one of these days to get a bug into a drop of water on a glass beneath the field of view of a big magnifier where he can be made to look many hundred times as large as he is, but this is a much more difficult thing to do than one would suppose who never tried. One can see the work of these burs on a hen's head very plainly. It is a rascally work for sure, and soon ends in death if not attended to. The itch is so great that a ben will do herselt as much injury by scratching as the buirs do. I don't think the bugs do the eye as much hurt as the scratching does.

Yours, kindly and truly, Rouin Railroad. Los Ajsokles, Oct. 14, l(iS5. rervtc Apple. S.

)V. Jewett, of Shepherd Home, Vermont, writes to the American Agriculturist as follows: I desire to inform you bow I have preserved apples and have kept them fresh and fair for eighteen to twenty months. The syatem is worthy the experiment of fruit-growers in every section. I take the apples ripe and fresh from the trees, at tnis season of the year, and cover them up with dry, line coal ashes, to a depth of fourteen to hzhteen inches. I have apples that have pused two winters thus preserved, out ot d.Krs, exposed to rain and frosr, and yet the fruit came out fresh and fair.

How much longer the apples would keep under these circumstances 1 do not kuow. Possibly eggs, and some other perishable articles, might be kept by this simple and inexpensive process much inger than undt-r present methods. Tlure is no patent on this suggestion, and its sim plicity and light cohL should induce the experimenting of those who desire to keep fruit for long period. UOBTKILTIRAL fnirw poMdtao The Irall-Urow Utram Hamilton, Eq. Dear 8ir: Tour valued ltittr lias been receivt-d, and I you for the kind re membrance aud mention made of me therein.

I kin much obliged to you for the fair and full discussion of the subjects in which frutt growers are interested all OTer the State. The encouragement and enthusiastic support given by fruit-growers north and south, makes the Estate incorporation a certainty and a success. On the 10th of November next, the Fruit Union'1 will be an accomplished fact and a power in the State for the good of all fruit-growers. The business of marketing citrus fruit ia the Est can be done under State management far cheaper, and to better advantage than it can possibly be done by individual or local atwocia-tion frait-stippera, because the volume of business and varieties of fruit offered railroad companies and Eastern merchants will demand and secure belter services, lees charges for freight and commissions than could be obtained by a local corporation shipping oranges "about three months in the year. It is safe to say that an Eaatern merchant would gladly do a full year's business in California fruit on a commission of bve per while he would not do three months' business in any particular fruit for less than ten per cent.

The State management will do all the business through a local board of directors who will see to the proper sanction, packing and shipping of fruit, with boxing and paper furnished change of diet. Horse recovering from fever frequently lose a portion of tne nair iroin the mane and tail. In the latter case it seems to rife from an impoverished state of the blood. In rcirurd to treatment, if any positive cause, such damaged food, or neg lect of grooming, can be ascertained to have existed, measures, of course, must be taken to rectify it. Without euch amendment, local treatment will not be of much avail.

The local treatment consists in dressing the skin with equal parts ot mercurial ointment and soft soap, msdo into a lather with hot water, aud applied by mean of a still hair brush. The new hair will grow rapidly after this application. Besides the above local remedies, it will be necessary to act ou the system generally by a change of diet. Green food. which, bv means of its laxative quali ties, lessens the irritability of the skin, huulu be given.

A bran mash, with tiye grains of arsenic daily, in addition to tne usual food, will exert a beneficial influence on the skin. An eminent veterinary advises this treatment tor pin worm in horses: Let the horse get every night in his ordiuary feed one of the following powders: lake of emetic tartar, one ounce; powdered sulphur and ginger, of each two ounce; mix and divide into six powders. At the end of a week give a dose of physic, such as a pint and a half of Unseed oil or bet ter, a six-drachm dose of Barbadocs aloes, either dissolved in a pint of boiling water or made into a ball with molasses. Watch the feet of your young horses while upon pasture. They are liable to grow out long and break oil, prob ably injuring the foot permanently.

Detrott Hew That is the one thing, perhaps, which the election of yesterday signifies that the people, as distinguished from 200 to 300 ditU-mti in each State, care nothing for civil-service reform so-called, and that the chief desire of all Democrat is to bare good D'-mocrrtts in office, while the chief desire of all Kepublicaus is to have good Republicans in otfrie. The civil-service policy of the President has not gained a vote, net, for the Democratic party in Ohio; and, we think, when the time comes around this will be found equally true of New York, Michigan, and other Estates. is before me and thankfully received. Since my last to you, we have had a meeting at Los Angeles of representative fruit-growers, in answer to a eall of the Los Angeles County Pomologies! Society. After a full discussion of the chief points, all views were harmonized, and a resolution passed to organize an incorporation for fruit-shipping and irketing for Southern California. A sub-committee of nine was ap- pt in ted to prepare the papers for said incorporation. That committee will m-jet at the Board of Trade rooms in L.

Angeles on the 22d and re-1 port all the details of said incorporation for the press, and soon after call a meeting lor ratification, subscription uf sUvk, election of officers, after which a code of by-laws will be ad opted. Ail dividends are to be made pro raJs on the amount of fruit shipped by i th ftockholders, and all officers to be paid by salary. Alt expenses through middlemen to be avoided as far as possible, and only so tar as is necessary to nuarket the fruit in the Eastern centers will their services be required. All fruit lo be packed under ins pec-1 tion, and all shipments by super-cargo, in train-load. All profits on sales to inure to the grower, etc.

When you get your northern machine in working oider, and we our southern, we will be ready to make su -h arrangements with you a the circumstances may require. Co-operation will be a necessity in regard to some kinds of fruit, but not in oranges. We think you are doing a good thing, and you success in it, but wo have not the least idea of submitting our business to any other hands tb in our own nor do we mean to have complicated with other conditions. Last season we shipped 1403 carloads of oranges, and we expect to retch 2000 this season. This will give ue all the prestige we need witn transportation companies.

Our fears do reaeh far north of Los Angeles. We have more to fear near home. Consolidation is our greatest need, and we can combine the growers in a Southern California incorporation m.icy times easier than it would be possible to do in so large a scheme as yiu pmjtosc. but we expect to find much difficulty in the way of this. If we cannot succeed in uuiting me orange grow tre, you up north certainly cannot.

Our sub-committee are: J.DeBarth Siiorb, Chairman, San Gabriel; H- K. Saow, Tustin; Kev. C. F. Loop, Pomona; Dr.

The JEarly Wood lied, Large lied Drumhead and Vilmorius are considered the best. Experience coadtnues to prove that the planting of walnut trees is a profitable investment of time and money, especially for young farmers who can alford to wait. A small feeding of potatoes, carrots or other roots to horses two or three times a week, will be better than alt grain. Carrots are probably the best rcots for horses, but potatoes, turnips or beets will be better than none. In localities where buckwheat is largely grown farmers find it an excellent plan to feed the bran from it to milch cows.

It is not fattening, but makes a large quantity of milk, more and better than the Iced from wheat. In some parts of Minnesota, says an exchange, two pounds of creamery buttery will buy a bushel and a half of wheat, and while the wheat farmer's tarm is ever becoming poorer, the land of the dairyman is always improving. A Khode Island farmer claims that two weeks1 time can be saved in grow ing potatoes by letting the sprouts grow about three inches long before planting. Much care has to be exercised, however, or the sprouts will get broken on. A baas Horses.

Chicago Hormus.j The long-standing question, "Is colt racing injurious?" is receiving corroborative proof in the negative, through the performances of Clemmie U. auri Phyllis. Both these mares are rejoicing in uncommon speed and stamina this season, lo fact, they are furnishing the grandest proton ed contests this year. It may worth while uuch upon the career of each. Phyllis won a three-year -old race of half-mile heats in 17, but her active work on the turf as a four-year-old, anil has continued ever since with signal success, from Canada to Texas, and now her record stands at 2 Clcm-mie was foaled in 1877, and won her first race as a three-year-old, time.

2:43. Next year we saw her perform at Chicsgo, when she was beaten bv Phil Thompson and Director, but later that Beaaon she beat a Held of aged horses in a long and tierce contest and closed her xour-vear-oid experi ence with a record of 2:28. Since then she has been kept busy all over the couutry, and has generally acquitted herself with great credit. These mares are long and rangy in conformation, with strong muscles, robust constitution, and evenly balanced mental organization. The high degree of perfection which these trotting prodigies possess may account for their long and successful turf career.

Of the two, Phyllis appears best able to withstand the arduous duties of a long campaign. Notwithstanding she began the pr ent year's labor in Tcxias, before the other trotter had seen a sulky, she is the present of tite 2:16 class, for she defeated t'lemmie 6. and oth ers, both at Hartford and Springfield, making? the beat time at each place. 2:17. Dr.

Finlay, in the New York Sports man, gives the following formula for promoting the growth of a horse mane and tail uKubbing the mane and tail usually results from an unhealthy condition of the skin which, in most cases, is produced by neglect of grooming, or by bid food, or any sudden change of diet even from bad to good. Occasionally, however, it appears in stables wheie both grooming and food are unquestionably good.
